Mrs Reade will support across Year 3.

Important information:

Please can all children line up on KS2 playground ready to be collected at 8:25am. This allows us to be ready to start our learning promptly at 8:30am. Children should be collected at 3pm.

PE will be on a Monday. Please send your child to school in PE kit on this day. Please wear a school PE kit, tracksuits are available to order or children can wear navy blue or black shorts, joggers or leggings and a white t-shirt with a navy fleece or jumper. Trainers must be worn for outdoor PE.

Our curriculum Summer 1

Maths

This half term we will be focussing on length and perimeter. Within, this unit we will:

  • Measure in metres (m), centimetres (cm) and millimetres (mm).
  • Find equivalent lengths.
  • Compare lengths.
  • Add and subtract lengths.

 

Later in the half term we will focus on mass and capacity. Within this unit we will:

  • Measure in litres (l) and millilitres (ml).
  • Order and compare litres and millilitres.
  • Convert between litres and millilitres.
  • Add and subtract volume and capacity.

 

 

English

This half term, children will use the book ‘Journey’ as a stimulus for their writing. Our English lessons will build up to writing an adventure story based on ‘Journey’.

We will be focussing on the key skills:

  • Use the present perfect form of verbs in contrast to the past tense.
  • Use prepositions, conjunctions and adverbs to express time, place and cause.
  • Group related ideas into paragraphs.

Topic 

This half term our topic is Emperors and Empires. We will be learning about the Roman invasion of Britain and what life was like in Roman times. We will also explore the positive impact the Romans had on our country and how some of their inventions still affect our life today.

Our curriculum Summer 1

Maths

Maths

This half term we will be focussing on fractions. Within this unit, we will be developing our understanding of the numerator and denominator in unit and non-unit fractions. We will compare and order fractions, place fractions on a number line and find equivalent fractions. We will add and subtract fractions and find unit and non-unit fractions of amounts.

English

This half term, children will use the book ‘The Silence Seeker’ as a stimulus for their writing. Our English lessons will build up to rewriting ‘The Silence Seeker’ in the third person and including dialogue.  

We will be focussing on the key skills:

Form nouns with a range of prefixes

Use present and past tenses correctly and consistently including the progressive and present perfect forms

Build a varied and rich vocabulary

Use inverted commas to punctuate direct speech

Topic 

This half term our topic is Discover Doncaster.  The children will use primary and secondary sources of evidence to learn about key events that have happened in Doncaster’s history and its famous link to the railway industry. In geograophy, we will be finding out about different types of land use and investigating how land is used in our local area. During our science lessons, we will be learning about light and investigating how shadows are formed.

Our curriculum Spring 1

Maths

This half term we will be focussing on multiplication and division. Within this unit we will be exploring the multiplication and division facts within the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. Then, we will practise using concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to multiply and divide 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. We will be applying our learning with problem solving and reasoning throughout the unit.

 

English

This half term, children will use the book ‘The Fossil Girl’ as a stimulus for their writing. Our English lessons will build up to writing an entry to Mary Annings fossil journal.

We will be focussing on the key skills:

Building an increasing range of sentence structures.

Using adverbs to express time, place and cause.

Using headings and subheadings to aid presentation.

Assessing the effectiveness of our own and others’ writing.

Topic 

This half term the children will explore the features and characteristics of the Earth’s layers as part of our topic Rocks, Relics and Rumbles. We will be learning about how volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis are caused and the impact these events have on the surrounding areas.

Our Curriculum in Autumn 2:

Maths

This half term Year 3 will be focussing on addition and subtraction. The children will use concrete apparatus and pictorial jottings to add and subtract 3 digit numbers, including with exchanging. They will then use these methods alongside showing working out in column addition and column subtraction.

Later in the half term, the children will move to our multiplication and division unit focussing on the 3, 4 and 8 times tables.

English

This half term, children will use the book ‘Nen and the Lonely Fisherman’ as a stimulus for their fantasy story writing. They will focus on including the key features: conjunctions to express time, place and cause, adverbs to express time and inverted commas.

Topic 

This half term Year 3’s topic is Scrumdiddlyumptious. Children will learn about the different food groups and why we need them. They will then design, make and evaluate a healthy sandwich. Children will learn about how/why foods are grown in different countries and transported to England. Children will also learn about Fairtrade and its benefits.

Our Curriculum in Autumn 1:

Maths

Our first unit will be place value. Children will begin by learning how to count in 100s. They will learn that a 3-digit number is made up of hundreds, tens and ones and they will be able to represent this in many ways using equipment and/or pictorially. They will extend the number line
to 1,000 and know where different numbers lie. They will use their place value knowledge to compare and order 3-digit numbers.

English

This half term, children will use the book 'How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth' as a stimulus for their instruction writing. Children will explore the features of instruction writing focussing specifically on adjectives, imperative verbs and time conjunctions. They will then plan, write and edit their own instructions.

Children will also use the book 'Stone Age Boy' to inspire their writing of a setting description.

Topic 

This half term the children will be learning about the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age as part of our topic Through the Ages. We will be discovering what life was like during these time periods including the challenges that the early humans faced. As part of our topic we will be visiting Creswell Crags.
