Welcome to Year Six!

Welcome to year six, the year six team are Mrs Marr, Mr Cowie, Mrs Mathers, Mrs Deakin, Mrs Shahzad and Mrs DeGiorgio. We all welcome you warmly and wish you a successful year.

 

Important information

School begins promptly at 8.25am - please be lined up for this time. The end of the school day is 3pm. Please ensure you come to school in full uniform - including your tie.

PE is every Wednesday. Pupils should come to school in their PE kit on Wednesdays.

Our curriculum in Summer term 1

Maths:

This half term we will cover a wide range of topics to help us get ready for SATS:

  • fractions, decimals and percentages
  • four operations
  • revisiting areas of maths previously studied

As well as covering all of the topics above, we will be working hard to devleop our arithmetic skills.

English:

We will focus on lots of short burst writing to improve our grammar skills and to help us get ready for SATS!

We will work with a range of texts and text types across the term. 

Our class novel: Holes by Louis Sachar

A fantastic story. Meet Stanley as he is sent to 'summer camp', deep in the American desert. Here, he learns a great deal about life, friendship and more!

 

Topic:

Our topic for the Summer term is 'Early Islamic Civilisation'. We will explore the geography of this vast civilisation, learn all about the inventions and great works of this period and how they helped to shape the modern world as we know it today.

 

Our curriculum in Spring term 2

Maths:

This half term we will cover a wide range of topics to help us get ready for SATS:

  • fractions, decimals and percentages
  • area, perimeter and volume
  • shape

As well as covering all of the topics above, we will be working hard to devleop our arithmetic skills.

English:

We will be writing a range of pieces to begin building our writing portfolios. We will spend lots of time focusing on the writing skills we need to produce our very best work, developing our vocabulary and understanding of the grammar we need to build into our work.

 

Our class novel: Shackleton's Journey by William Grill

A fantastic non-fiction text telling the thrilling story of the journey of Shackleton and his men from danger to safety!

 

Topic:

Our topic for the Spring term is 'Frozen Kingdom'. We will explore the geography of the Arctic and Antarctic, learn all about the fascinating animals that call these remote locations home and why keeping them safe and free from pollution, mining and drilling is so important to all humans and to the planet.

 

 

 

Our curriculum in Spring term 1

Maths:

This half term we will cover a wide range of topics to help us get ready for SATS:

  • conversion facts
  • decimals
  • fractions, decimals and percentages

As well as covering all of the topics above, we will be working hard to devleop our arithmetic skills.

English:

We will be building up to writing a diary entry as Ernest Shackleton. We will spend lots of time focusing on the writing skills we need to produce our very best work, developing our vocabulary and understanding of the grammar we need to build into our work.

Maths:

This half term we will spend most of the term looking at fractions after we finish our 4 operations unit.

We will begin by using Numicon to make fractions to help our understanding of what makes a fraction.

We will also be focussing on arithmetic skills.

English:

For our first unit, we will be building up to writing an information text We will spend lots of time focusing on the writing skills we need to produce our very best work, developing our vocabulary and understanding of the grammar we need to build into our work.

Alongside this, we will work on non-chronological reports that help us to develop our understanding of our topic 'Blood Heart'.

 

Our class novel: Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman

Cameron is faced with a terrible choice: either face almost certain death or agree to be a guinea pig for a doctor with an experimental procedure of implanting genetically modified pig hearts into people.

Explore Cam's choices, his family's emotions and much more in this fantastic book!

 Topic:

Our first topic is ‘Blood Heart'. We will learn all about the heart, the circulatory system and how heart is 'at the heart of it all'. We will discover how blood works, how our hearts work together with other organs and just what is inside our hearts!

We began our unit by dissecting lamb's hearts - a fascinating experience!

Our curriculum in Autumn term 1

Maths:

We will begin our Maths journey looking at place value before moving on to four operations. We will also be focussing on arithmetic skills.

English:

For our first unit, we will be building up to writing a flashback story. We will spend lots of time focusing on the writing skills we need to produce our very best work, developing our vocabulary and understanding of the grammar we need to build into our work.

Alongside this, we will work on non-chronological reports that help us to develop our understanding of our topic, ‘A Child’s War’.

 

Our class novel: Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Mogorian

Willie has been evacuated from his home and sent by train to the countryside. There, he meets Tom, a seemingly grump, unfriendly man who no one can believe would take in an evacuee. This thrilling story shows the reader how everyone’s life was transformed by Willie’s arrival.

 Topic:

Our first topic is ‘A Child’s War’. Pupils learn about World War Two from the perspective of refugees. They will explore the causes and impacts of the war, how it shaped the development of the UK, Europe and beyond and how the horrors of World War Two have influenced thinking across the world about how conflicts are resolved.
